Bigod family

Bigod was a family of Anglo-Norman nobility that came with the Norman conquest of England. Your ancestor is probably Robert le Bigot, was not of the high -Norman nobility, but at the court of Duke William II of Normandy, the future conqueror of England played an important role. Robert and his putative son Roger took probably at the Battle of Hastings in part, and were - like so many other Norman nobles also - then rewarded with extensive lands, especially in East Anglia. The Domesday Book lists six lordships in Essex, 117 in Suffolk and 187 in Norfolk for Roger.

Roger is sometimes referred to as the Earl of Norfolk, however, it is uncertain whether he was ever awarded this item. The first family member who led sure this item, what his son Hugh Bigod († 1177 ). Until the 5th Earl, Roger Bigod, he was kept in the family, this was the county in 1302 to the King back, even though he had a brother and two nephews.

A descendant of the brother of the last Earl was Francis Bigod, who was executed under Henry VIII in connection with the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1537.
