Earl of Norfolk

Earl of Norfolk is a title, which was awarded in the Peerage of England several times. The first award was in 1070, the first dynasty, which held the title for several generations, what the family Bigod; they were followed by Mowbray, who also received the title of Duke of Norfolk.

Since the Bigods in the female line from William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke, descended, they received the hereditary title of the Earl Marshal, which is still borne by the Dukes of Norfolk.

The current title in 1644 to Thomas Howard, 18th Earl of Arundel, loaned, the heir to the Dukedom of Norfolk Howard, which was extinguished in 1572. Howard's grandson, the 20th Earl of Arundel and 3rd Earl of Norfolk, was given the Dukedom 1660 5th Duke back.
