Bill Watrous

William Russell ( "Bill" ) Watrous III ( born May 8, 1939 in Middletown, Connecticut, USA) is an American jazz trombonist. He is one of the most famous bop -oriented jazz trombonists of the past 30 years and is known as an outstanding technician.

Life

Bill Watrous came on June 8, 1939 in Middletown, Connecticut (USA), on the world. Although as a child he visited some music lessons and his father - himself a trombonist - was introduced to the trombone, he has taught this by and large themselves. Beginning of the 1960s he studied with Herbie Nichols before he became a professional jazz trombonist.

He made ​​his debut with Billy Butterfield and belonged 1962-1967 to the trombonists in Kai Windings bands. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he was a sought-after studio musician in New York. He worked with the likes of Quincy Jones, Maynard Ferguson, Johnny Richards, and Woody Herman and played 1965-1969 in the band for the TV show " Merv Griffin's show".

After Bill Watrous in 1971 was a member of the jazz-rock group Ten Wheel Drive, he formed his own big band (Manhattan Wildlife Refuge Big Band ) with which he recorded two albums for Columbia Records 1973-1977. The mid 1970s moved Bill Watrous to Los Angeles, where he continued to work as a studio musician, own plates with Danny Stiles and other recorded and occurred mainly in local clubs.
