Biperiden is a drug from the group of anticholinergic and is used as an anti -Parkinson drug. Biperiden is also used to treat the often severe extrapyramidal side effects such as body stiffness and gaze palsy, which can cause many antipsychotics above a certain dose. The active agent is sold under the trade name Akineton ® since 1953.
Biperiden was synthesized by the German chemist Wilfried Klavehn the first time on behalf of Knoll AG ( Germany ). In March 1953, the drug was patented and marketed under the name. There are now numerous generic drugs in tablet form ( retarded, not retarded ) or stand as an injection solution.
Operation
Side Effects and Warnings
The therapeutic dose is between 2 to 16 mg, which is to be started with a low initial dose always. Typical side effects are dry mouth, dizziness, nausea and tachycardia. Occasionally calls biperiden out euphoric or anxious - agitated states, which is why it is often abused. Furthermore, the drug lowers the seizure threshold and is therefore contraindicated during an existing epilepsy, further, it may be an increase in intraocular pressure, which if left untreated can lead to glaucoma.
Can biperiden responsiveness even when used as intended as far as change, that the ability to drive and the ability to operate machinery is impaired.
In case of overdose hallucinogenic effects, disorientation, confusion, and no reference to the environment ( do not know where you are, distance can not estimate, etc. )
Stereoisomerism
Biperiden contains three different stereocenters. Theoretically, there is therefore 23 = 8 stereoisomers. The drug is biperiden a racemate ( 1:1 mixture of isomers) of (1R, 2S, 4R) -form and the (1S, 2R, 4S)- form.
