Birger Brosa

Birger Brosa († January 9, 1202 at Visingsö ) was a Swedish Jarl ( Duke ) 1174-1202 and wore a coat of arms, a French lily.

Brosa means of Smiling, this epithet is, however, only known in the West Nordic sources of the 13th and 14th century. In the 1180s, he became known as dux sveorum.

He was in his time the most powerful man in Östergötland and had next to the ancestral seat in Bjälbo several farms in Östergötland, Orebro and Värmland. It is believed that he also had farms in Södermanland ( Södermanland ), since he held the right of patronage of the church in Södermanland Saint Eskils. Birger Brosa was a great patron of the monastery Riseberga.

According to Hermann von Wartberges Chronicon Livoniae Birger Brosa wanted to undertake a crusade to Livonia in 1195, his ship was driven off but to Estonia. After three days plundered the country, Estonians agreed to pay tribute and convert to Christianity. Following the adoption of the tribute Birger returned to Sweden.

Filming

2008, the director Peter Flinth filmed the trilogy by Jan Guillou Götaland under the title Arn - The Knight Templar. Birger Brosa was portrayed by Stellan Skarsgård.
