The fluorescent dye Hoechst 33342 is used in fluorescence microscopy to stain DNA. Hoechst 33342 is excited by UV light at a wavelength of about 350 nm and emits light in the spectrum from blue to cyan. Since Hoechst 33342 interacts with DNA, it acts potentially carcinogenic and mutagenic.
