Bismarck Tower (Hanover)

The Bismarcksäule in Hanover was a tower for the purpose only patriotic - national, then Nazi major events: The column on the territory of the later excavated Maschsee near the rapids trench was in the Third Reich scene of the book burning in Hanover.

History

After the death of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in Germany put a worn mainly by students patriotic campaign, which resulted also in Hanover, a special memorial was initiated in honor of the deceased Chancellor. So decided a meeting of the magistrates of the city and from the civil provost- College against the votes of the Social Democrats and the Guelph party on 27 August 1899, the erection of a monument.

Winners of the tendered architectural competition in 1901, the Hanoverian Alfred Sasse. According to his plans was from 1903 to 1904 within the Aegidienmasch in the amount of Geibelstraße a 20 meter high tower, on whose top is surrounded by four dragon heads fire bowl was built. The walk- column could be climbed up to a viewing platform 16 meters high. The building was donated by the Hanoverian student body.

After the construction of numerous national- patriotic events were held on the column, in particular multiply on 18 October, the anniversary of the victory over the occupying troops of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Leipzig.
