Bitsch, Switzerland

Bitsch ( Valais German: Bitsch ) is a municipality in the district east Raron in the German-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland. The village has a joint parish with Morel.

History

First mention is the Bisse " Bitscheri ", which is still in operation today, in 1408. Chapel of the Virgin Mary in the small hamlet Wasen was built in 1657. The Burger House in Wasen would be built in 1703. 1730 was the pilgrimage chapel " Mariae 7 pain " Zen High Flüehen.

1799 occurred in Massaboden a battle against the French at the old Massa bridge. Archaeological finds of national importance have been made in the years 1951/52 and 2002 in a 10,000 m² large area.

Until 1889 Bitsch was a municipality with reeds. The Hennebique channel, the oldest concrete structure of its kind in Switzerland, was built in 1898. In Massaboden 1915/16 the power plant Massaboden is built.

During the construction of the power plant Electra -Massa 1964, the reservoir was created Gibidum. The dam is 120 meters high. Beginning in 1975, boomed the construction of apartments. These are now inhabited mainly by locals. In 1977, the Bruder Klaus church is built in Massaboden.
