Björn Zikarsky

Björn Zikarsky ( born July 17, 1967 in Erlangen ) is a former German swimmer who won a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics.

Björn Zikarsky began his career along with his twin brother Bengt at the SSG Erlangen. In 1989 he started for Hamburg, towards the end of his career swam Björn Zikarsky for the SC DHfK Leipzig. The 2.07 meter tall athlete was a specialist in the sprint distances. In 1988 and 1989 he was third in the German Championship in the 100 meters freestyle; 1995 and 1996, he took second place.

At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul Börn Zikarsky swam for two seasons in the finals: With the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay he finished sixth, with the medley relay he finished fourth. The following year, Björn Zikarsky won the 4 x 100 - meter freestyle relay at the European Championships in Bonn. Peter Sitt, Andre Schadt and Bengt and Björn Zikarsky won in 3:19,68 minutes before the squadrons of France and Sweden.

Only after completing his business administration studies Zikarsky returned back into the international class. In the European Swimming Championships in Vienna in 1995, he won three medals. About 100 meters freestyle, he finished behind Alexander Popov and Torsten Berg margin in 50.23 seconds for third place. The freestyle sprint relay with Christian Tröger, Christian Keller, Torsten mountain range and Björn Zikarsky won silver behind the Russian squadron. The medley relay with Tino Weber, Mark Warnecke, Fabian Hieronimus and Björn Zikarsky finished in third place behind the Russian squadron and the Hungarians. At the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996, he joined in the same disciplines as in Vienna. About 100 meters freestyle he reached the B final and finished in 49.91 seconds in total to eleventh place. With the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay in the occupation Christian Tröger, Bengt and Björn Zikarsky and Mark Pinger he won the bronze medal behind the United States and the Russian squadron. The medley relay as in 1988 reached the fourth place.

Björn Zikarsky lives with his wife Kylie, who was active as a surfer and swimmer, in their native Australia.
