Black colobus

The black colobus (Colobus satanas ) is a primate of the group of colobus monkeys. It is also called Satansaffe, but this term is more often applied to the South American monkeys Satan from the group of Sakiaffen.

Features

Of the other members of the black and white colobus monkeys, this species can be distinguished by their entirely black fur; existing in the other types shoulder white manes or beard hair lacks. The body is built slender, the tail very long. As with all colobus monkeys, the thumb is re-formed as an adaptation to the arboreal life.

Distribution and habitat

Black colobus monkeys live in the middle of Africa. Its distribution area covers the southern Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, including the island of Bioko, maybe they also live in the Republic of Congo. Their habitat are rainforests.

Way of life

These primates are diurnal and usually stay on the trees. Unlike other black-and- white colobus monkeys do not live in harem groups with only one male, but in multi- male groups with several females and the corresponding offspring. Therefore, the areas are bigger.

In contrast to the other, primarily eating leaves black and white colobus monkeys, these animals take mainly seeds to himself, occasionally supplemented by young leaves, fruits and flowers. The teeth of this type as an adjustment to larger and flatter than in the other members of their species.

Threat

The main threats are the progressive destruction of their habitat and hunting for their fur and meat represents the IUCN lists the species as endangered ( vulnerable ).
