George Robert Waterhouse

George Robert Waterhouse ( born March 6, 1810 in Somers Town, England; † January 21, 1888 in Putney ) was a British zoologist.

Life and work

George Robert Waterhouse was the son of architect James Edward Waterhouse. In 1833 he founded with the Royal Entomological Society of London and was elected administrator of the library. From 1849 to 1850 he was president of the society.

In Liverpool, Waterhouse was from 1835 to 1836 curator of the Museum of Liverpool Royal Institution. He then moved to the Zoological Society, for which he also worked as a curator until 1843. In November 1843 he was assistive Curator of Mineralogy at the British Museum in London and in December 1851 administrator of the department. 1857 Waterhouse was administrator of the geological department. A post he held until June 21, 1880.

Charles Darwin learned Waterhouse already during his studies in Cambridge know the end of 1829, because they were both avid collectors of beetles. Beginning January 1837 via suitable Darwin collected during his journey with the HMS Beagle mammals and birds of the Zoological Society. Waterhouse agreed for the planned work, The Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Beagle mammals to edit, since he was already working on a catalog of the museum preserved in mammals ( Catalogue of the mammalia preserved in the Museum of the Zoological Society of London).
