Blackdown Java

Blackdown was a project to port the Java programming language on the Linux operating system. Java is used for creation and execution of computer programs. The Blackdown developers used while the source code of the JDK and JRE from Sun Microsystems, released under an appropriate license. They added patches Blackdown made to run on Linux. Not only does the PC platform was supported, but also further used with Linux platforms.

Sun later took over the Blackdown patches to issue his hand a Linux version of Java, but this version only supports the PC platform.

Contrary to popular belief, the Blackdown software is not open source software as defined by the Open Source Initiative ( OSI). Because source documents are used by Sun, made restrictions apply there. They are not compatible with the definition of the OSI. This creates the paradoxical situation that the source code is indeed available, the software is not considered by many as an open source.

As an open -source alternative there is the coffee project for the Java VM and GNU Classpath for the class libraries ( Blackdown delivered both).

In August 2007, the Blackdown project was terminated.
