The Bláhnúkur (also: Bláhnjúkur ) is a 943 m high volcano in Landmannalaugar in the Icelandic highlands. It is located in the municipality of Rangárþing Ytra.

Name

The name was given to the mountain of Pálmi Hannesson.

Volcanism

The formed during the ice age volcano is part of the volcanic system of Torfajökull.

It consists largely of Pechstein, a rhyolitic rock, which emerged during outbreaks under ice age glaciers, thus the unusual blue-gray Farbe.Die explains greenish tuffs that make up the mountain, are less firm than Palagonittuffe. Columns of acidic Pechstein alternate with pillow lava from felsic rocks. Basalt from often up to 1 m thickness covers this mixture.

In the gorge Grænagil which lies to the north at its foot, you can also find beige and reddish and greenish Rhyolithgestein copper precipitates.

Hiking

Marked trails lead up to the mountain and through the gorge Grænagil that lies between it and the lava field and Laugahraun on this.

Here you can also start the trekking path Laugavegur, which leads over the mountains to the south in the valley of the Þórsmörk. Another, easier option to get you started on the trekking path leads directly behind the huts over the lava field Laugahraun.
