Blue Grotto (Biševo)

The Blue Grotto of Biševo (Croatian: Modra Špilja ) is a cave on the east side of the island Biševo west of the island of Vis in Croatia.

On Biševo there are several caves, one of which Modra Špilja is the most popular and also the most worth seeing.

On sunny days, and with calmer seas submerged the sunlight that penetrates through a lying several feet below sea level natural cave opening, the interior of the cave in a fascinating blue hue. Objects that are immersed on the sea surface, appear here in a silvery sheen. Most impressive of all is to see this spectacle of nature 10:30 to 12:00 clock.

Long known to local fishermen, the cave in 1884 by Baron Eugen Rausonnet was discovered for the world. In the same year the current entrance was created artificially. Since then, the grotto is widely available and now a tourist magnet.

The cave is 24 meters long, 10-20 meters wide, up to 15 meters high and 16 meters deep. Access forms to a 1.5 meter high and 2.5 meter wide sea tunnel through which only paddle boats with a maximum length of 5 meters and a maximum height of 1 meter may reach the cave.
