BM25 Musudan

The BM25 Musudan is a medium range ballistic missile that was developed in North Korea. Other designations are Taepodong X, Nodong -B, Rodong -B or Mirim.

Development

In early 2003 it was announced that you work in North Korea on a new type of missile. Arms experts assume that emigrated Russian engineers from the State Rocket Center Makejev were involved in Miass in the development. For the first time BM25 Musudan was observed in October 2003 on the airfield Mirim. A single test launch took place probably in 2007 in Iran. In October 2010, the BM25 Musudan was presented at a military parade in Pyongyang for the first time to the public.

Technology

The BM25 Musudan is based on the Soviet R -27 (NATO: SS- N-6 Serb ) SLBM. The missile is a copy of R- 27, which has a longer fuselage section. The BM25 Musudan is a single stage rocket with a rocket engine 4D10 for hypergolic liquid propellants. To use come UDMH and fuming. Since this fuel is very corrosive to steel and aluminum, the rocket can be left only for a certain time in the fueled state. The drive section of the BM25 Musudan is probably also used in the launcher Unha. The warhead section seems to be a new development. The payload is 500-1200 kg and probably consists of a nuclear warhead. The assembly with a conventional fragmentation warhead is also possible. The maximum range of the missile, depending on the source at 2500-4000 km. The control BM25 Musudan by means of an inertial navigation platform. Depending on the shooting distance precision (CEP ) is achieved from 1300-2000 m. It is possible that a GPS guidance system is coupled to the control system. This allows the accuracy to 200-300 m improve. The system is housed on the MAZ-547/MAZ-7916-12x12-LKW and thus to locate quickly deployable and difficult; a preventive destruction is therefore not reliable. The missile can be launched directly into a missile base or at other locations. Each vehicle is equipped with a missile.

Dissemination

When the BM25 Musudan were introduced at the North Korean armed forces, is not precisely known. The series production probably began 2009. Operational combat readiness was achieved probably 2011. It is estimated that North Korea has 12-50 BM25 Musudan missiles.
