Bobby Plater

Robert " Bobby" Plater ( born May 13, 1914 in Newark (New Jersey), † November 20, 1982 in Lake Tahoe ), was an American jazz musician (alto saxophone, clarinet, flute) of the swing.

Plater began twelve years alto saxophone to play and had his first engagement with Donald Lambert and the Savoy Dictators in Newark. 1940 to 1942 he played with Tiny Bradshaw and was then until 1945 the U.S. Military. He briefly played with Cootie Williams and was from 1946 to 1964 mainly in Lionel Hampton, with whom he recorded a lot. He also worked as a freelance musician. He is known primarily as a saxophonist in the Count Basie Orchestra, where he served from 1964 (succeeding Frank Wess ) until his death.

Plater took only once under his own name, 1950 for Bullet Records. He is one of the composers of The Jersey Bounce.
