Body Percussion

Body Percussion is the sound generation with your own body with the aid of hands, feet and fingers. If in addition also the voice used is called Body Music.

Origin

Primates such as gorillas or chimpanzees use body percussion as a chest beating to strengthen the Roar or as a threatening gesture. Likewise, the chirping of the crickets by rubbing together of their hind feet can be counted on body percussion.

In various dances Body Percussion is used

  • Juba, a plantation dance, body percussion drum used as a substitute
  • Schuhplattler in which the Schuhplatteln, the slippers on legs, knees and soles of the feet is the solo of the man
  • Flamenco, in which the rhythmic clapping and the hard ramming up with the paragraph is characteristic

Sound generation

The main sound generation possibilities in Body percussion are clapping their hands, tapping with your hands on other parts of the body and stomping with one foot or both feet. On all parts of the body can be tapped, in which case either the palm of the hand, fist, or only the fingers are used. By changing the hand shape is changed in both the clapping and the sound when tapped.

Tongue clicking, chattering teeth, popping, snapping your fingers are more body percussion sounds.

The dynamics of the individual Body percussion sounds varies greatly and can be in many sounds little change. The Clap is dynamically the most flexible, some sounds can be heard in the piano or maximum Mezzo Forte.

Notation

For Body percussion there are no fixed rules notation. Following the Drum notation is in the body -percussion - works by Andreas Horwath the foot stomping like a bass drum, clapping like a snare, the snap of the fingers as a hi-hat and record the tapping on the chest, abdomen and thighs as tom-toms. Effects are usually listed by special note heads and other central lines or between rooms.
