Bokeo Province

Bokeo (Lao ແຂວງ ບໍ່ ແກ້ວ ) is a province in northwestern Laos in the Golden Triangle. It borders with Thailand and Myanmar.

The capital is Ban Houayxay, it is located on the Mekong River.

The province was created in 1983 as a spin- out of the province of Luang Namtha. In 1992, the districts Paktha and Pha Oudom were separated from the province of Oudomxay and referred to Bokeo.

The name Bokeo means gemstone mine, and points to the rich deposits of precious and semi-precious stones in the area.
