Boksburg

Province

Boksburg is a city in the metropolitan municipality of Ekurhuleni, Gauteng Province in South Africa. It is located 20 kilometers east of Johannesburg in 1600 meters altitude above the sea level. 2011 Boksburg had 260 321 inhabitants and is since the late 19th century, the center of the extensive coal and gold mining in the area.

Geographical location

Boksburg is situated near the eastern Witwatersrand. To the west of the towns of Boksburg Germiston and, further west, Johannesburg. East of Boksburg lie with increasing distance the cities of Benoni, Brakpan and Springs.

History

Boksburg was founded in 1887 to manage the mining sector in the surrounding mines. Is named the city after Edward W. Bok, the Permanent Secretary of the South African Republic from 1881 to 1889. Municipal law she received in 1903.
