Bolonia is located on the Costa de la Luz village in the south of Andalusia. It belongs to the municipality of Tarifa in the province of Cádiz, situated on the Strait of Gibraltar against the Moroccan city of Tangier. The bay of Bolonia with its 3.8 km long and up to 70 m wide, sandy beach is bordered to the west by the Cape Camarinal and on the east by the Punta Paloma. For sparsely populated inland towards the Sierra de La Plata, the Sierra de la Higuera and the Loma San Bartolomé raise.

Baelo Claudia

On the outskirts of Bologna is Baelo Claudia, one of the best preserved Roman settlements in Spain. Since 1917, excavations take place here. The excavation site can be visited, a visitor center provides information on the finds.

The sand dune of Bolonia

At the western end of the sandy beach of Bolonia is the ecological since 2001 for its significance as a natural monument protected dune of Bolonia. The dune as well as the surrounding mountains are part of the Parque Natural del Estrecho ( Nature Park Strait of Gibraltar ). The dune, more than 30 m high and 200 m wide, stands out from a wide dune system. The dune complex is one of the few in Andalusia - powered by the wind Levante, the frontal crashes here on the end of the bay - continuously advance into the interior. Apart from the ordinary beach grass plants can not under these conditions settle. The dune penetrates into a pine trees. The continuous progression of the sand inevitably leads to the death of pine trees, spilling it.
