Bom Jesus da Lapa

Bom Jesus da Lapa is located on the Rio São Francisco city in the Brazilian state of Bahia. The city's name means " The Good Jesus (from) the rock cave ". Bom Jesus da Lapa has an area of 4,200 km ²; she counted 63 480 inhabitants in 2010.

The town grew from a mission base that developed when the hermit Francisco de Mendonça Mar 1691 settled in one of the many caves along the Rio São Francisco. Within a few decades of Bom Jesus da Lapa was one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Brazil. The accommodation of the pilgrims is still the main industry. In second and third place, the fishing and the trade stand. Thanks to the scarcity of bridges over the Rio São Francisco, the city is a trade center and a market town.

Bom Jesus da Lapa is the seat of the Diocese of Bom Jesus da Lapa.
