Distribution and habitat requirements

The distribution center of the genus Bomarea are areas in the Andes between Colombia and Bolivia. Most species grow in forests and thickets in more or less humid environment. Only a few species of the genera Wichuraea and Bomarea s.str. can be found in the drier valleys of the Andes. None of the species growing in marsh and swamp areas.

System

The genus Bomarea 1802 was established by Charles François de Brisseau Mirbel in Histoire Naturelle of Végétaux, Growth in par Familles, 9, p 71. The genus name honors Bomarea the French naturalist Jacques -Christophe Valmont de Bomare (1731-1807), author of the Dictionnaire universel d' histoire naturelle. As lectotype was 1995 Bomarea ovata ( Cav. ) Mirb. determined. The two species belong to the tribe Bomarea and Alstroemeria Alstroemerieae within the family of Alstroemeriaceae. The genera Bomarea and Alstroemeria differ from one another by their base chromosome number; for Bomarea is x = 9, x = 8 to Alstroemeria

The genus includes about 150 species Bomarea into four subgenera:

  • Bacsata: With five species.
  • Bomarea s.str. With 79 species.
  • Sphaerine: With twelve species.
  • Wichuraea: With 18 kinds.
