Bombay High Court is the highest court in Mumbai, India.

The Bombay High Court was established on Aug. 14, 1862 due to the High Courts Act, 1861. His area of ​​responsibility includes the states of Maharashtra and Goa and the Union Territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Field offices are located in the cities of Nagpur, Aurangabad and Panaji.

Building

The courthouse was built between April 1871 and November 1878 according to plans by the British architect John Augustus Fuller. The first meeting was held on January 10, 1879. With a length of over 170 meters and a height of almost 60 meters, it is one of the largest Victorian Gothic buildings in the city.

The building has six floors, and is surrounded in this full of arcades. In the central axis of the symmetric system, the spacious staircase is located. The massive main entrance with grand staircase is flanked laterally by side stair towers. Above them are the sculptures of Justice ( Justice) and mercy ( Mercy ). The main entrance was ( and is to this day ) used by the judges. The public input is possible via the east side, also in the central axis. The plan includes several different-sized courtrooms and adjoining function rooms.

The finest equipped hearing room located in the main tower in the fourth and fifth floor. The two floors continuous space is completely exposed through lancet windows, the floors are equipped with elaborate mosaics. A teak gallery for the public divided the space horizontally. Above the west entrance on the third floor of a library from which is to enter from the spacious Venetian balcony with views of the Oval Maidan.
