Bonino da Campione

Bonino da Campione (* 1325 in Campione d' Italia ) was an Italian sculptor of the Gothic, was active 1350-1376. He was probably a pupil of Giovanni di Balduccio from Pisa and is referred to in contemporary documents as one of the sculptors who worked on the Cathedral of Milan.

Bonino is one of Campione Master (it. magistri Campionesi ), so one of the sculptors of the 14th century, all from Campione d' Italia, an Italian enclave in the Swiss Lombardy, came. His name da Campione was given because of his background, but he is no family name represents the art of Campionesen primarily served the rulers in Milan and Verona, to glorify themselves in grave monuments in churches. Bonino created 1375/76 in the Romanesque church of Santa Maria Antica in Verona the tomb of Cansignorio della Scala from the noble family of the Scaliger, the lords of Verona from 1260 to 1387. The richly decorated monumental monument is considered the main work of Bonino. Other works include the grave of Bishop Balduino Lambertini of 1349 in the Cathedral of Brescia and the tomb of Bernabo Visconti of 1363, now in the Castello Sforzesco in Milan.
