Bonnie Bassler

Bonnie L. Bassler ( b. 1962 ) is an American microbiologist who is regarded as pioneer of a new, important research branch of microbiology, bacterial intercellular communication signal.

Life

Bonnie L. Bassler originally wanted to be a veterinarian, but the obligatory animal experiments were ye walk contrary. Therefore, they turned to the " UC Davis " of molecular biology, wanted to select the cancer medicine to their field of work as a researcher. Then she discovered the means of communication between bacteria. Before it actually managed to prove that various bacterial species to coordinate despite the high energetic Biosynthesekosten lively on molecular signals was the outdated doctrine that bacteria are not in a position. The researcher colleague Nealson, reported in 2003 the science journalist Steve Silberman in "Wired", had been repeatedly rejected by his results to " Vibrio fischeri " by the "peer review" of the microbiological journals as a " dreamer ".

In 1990, she had just her doctorate, she received a research contract under the geneticist Mike Silverman on " Agouron Institute" in La Jolla, California. She was instrumental in the discovery and development of molecular communication mechanisms between bacteria in the English-speaking world referred to as quorum sensing. Since 1994 she is a professor at Princeton University and runs a renowned research laboratory.

Bassler is the editor of the prestigious journal Annual Review of Genetics.
