The Ethiopian Palmyra palm ( Borassus aethiopum ) is a Central and West African plant of the family palm family ( Arecaceae ).

Description

The Ethiopian Palmyra palm is the largest of all African palm species. You usually achieved stature heights up to 20 feet, rarely up to 33 meters with an average diameter of 40 to 50 centimeters at the base up to 85 inches, above the center in old individuals up to 80 inches. The petioles are prickly, Palmat the leaves.

The plants are dioecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( dioecious ). The female plants bear to maturity large yellow to orange fruit.

Dissemination

Borassus aethiopum occurs in the Sudan zone of Burkina Faso to the Central African Republic, they colonized dry savannas.

Use

The use include the extraction of palm wine, the consumption of vegetables seedlings as well as the use of leaves for mats, baskets, fans, hats and other wattle.
