Borgholm

Borgholm is a city on the Swedish island of Öland and capital of the municipality of the same name. It lies on the west coast of the island.

History

Beginning in 1842 the present church of Borgholm, which was initially built as a school building was erected. 1867 took the first Öland daily newspaper, the Ölandsbladet its activities in Borgholm on. Since the beginning of the 20th century, Borgholm developed, mainly due to the nearby royal residence Solliden Palace, into a tourist resort. In the same period, several railway lines that were shut down in 1962 emerged. After 1973, the Öland bridge was completed, many residents commuted Borgholms to Kalmar to work.

Buildings and Monuments

The most famous Borg Holmer buildings are the castle ruins of Borgholm Castle and Solids. Not far from these locks is the parkland Borgehage. Next to the church of Borgholm Borgholm and the city museum but also the Bronze Age grave sites Blå rör, northeast of the city and the ship -setting of Borgholm are worth mentioning. More recently, the hunt stone northeast of the castle ruins reminiscent of royal hunts of the 19th century. On the road to Köpingsvik is below the Santa Elof source a so-called victims pile.

Economy

With one of the largest marinas in Sweden but also a swimming pool, restaurants and hotels Borgholm is a distinctive tourist destination. In the city the Öland newspaper Ölandsbladet appears.

Personalities

Borgholm is the birthplace of the Swedish singer Folke Rydberg ( 1900-1969 ). The Swedish writer Eva Bexell (* 1945 ), published their works in part to German, grew up in Borgholm. 1946 1 racer Slim Borgudd was born in Borgholm future Formula. The area for the Oscar-winning sound engineer sound editor Per Hallberg was born in 1958 in the village. Swedish journalist Jens von Reis, born in 1973, also from the city.

In Borgholm politician Johan Fredrik Caspersson (1813-1880) and the sculptor Johan Gustafsson August died ( 1852-1932 ). The Swedish singer Brita Borg (1926-2010) died at the site.
