Borgo (rione of Rome)

The Borgo (also I Borghi ) is the XIV rione (district ) of Rome. It extends from the Castel Sant'Angelo to the Vatican.

History

On the ancient Ager Vaticanus, Pope Leo IV in the walled Leonine city to protect pilgrims between the developed to the castle Mausoleum of Hadrian and the Basilica. It continued, however, the name used by German-speaking pilgrims castle in the Italianate form by Borgo. The construction of the Via della Conciliazione (1936-1950), a large part of the medieval buildings were destroyed.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms shows a reclining lion in front of a mountain, over which stands a star. The lion stands for Leo IV as well as for Pope Sixtus V, who has taken up the Borgo 14th rione in Rome.
