Borgou Department
Borgou is a department of Benin, with its capital Parakou.
Geography
The Department is located in the east of the country, bordered to the north by the Department Alibori, to the south by the Department Collines, in the northwest to the Department Atakora, on the west by the department of Donga and on the east by Nigeria.
Population
At the last census in 2002 counted 724 171 inhabitants the department.
Ethnic groups
The largest colonies are Bariba with 37.6 %, the Fulbe with 20.0 %, the Gando with 9.9 %, the Nagot with 4.3%, 3.7% with the Dendi and the Fon with 3.0 % share of the total population.
Religion
Around two-thirds ( exactly 66.3 %) of residents are followers of Islam. One fifth ( 19.7% ) is committed to Christianity ( of which 77 % are Catholics and Methodists around 7% ). The rest belongs to traditional religions.
History
In 1999 the northern part was separated as Alibori Department.
