Boril of Bulgaria

Boril Asen Strez ( Bulg Борил Асен Стрез; † after 1218 ) was from 1207 to 1218 Tsar of the Bulgarians. He belonged to the dynasty Asen.

Boril Asen was the son of a daughter of Boljaren Asen, founder of the dynasty of the same name. Was thus nephew of Tsar Kaloyan Boril Asen. His father was a powerful Strez Boljare in today's Southwest Bulgaria and Macedonia. When Tsar Kaloyan in the fall of 1207 preparations hit for a siege of Thessaloniki, located Boril joined a Boljarenverschwörung with the wife Kaloyan, a Cuman princess on. Tsar Kaloyan was murdered in the camp. Then Boril was crowned in the capital Tarnovo to the tsar.
