Borys Sabarko

Borys Mychajlowytsch Sabarko (Ukrainian Борис Михайлович Забарко; born November 18, 1935 in Kalininske, Kherson Oblast ) is a Ukrainian historian and president of the All-Ukrainian Association of Jewish concentration camp and ghetto survivors.

Life

Sabarko escaped as a child of the ghetto Scharhorod. After the war he studied at the University of Czernowitz, was a PhD student at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kiev, where he received his doctorate in 1971. 1969 to 1988 he was a research associate at the Institute of History, 1971-1991 member of the Soviet-German Historical Commission, 1989-2002 researcher at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Sabarko is the author of about 200 books and articles, published in Israel, Austria, Russia, Czechoslovakia, Ukraine and Hungary. In Germany he published his multi-volume series on the Holocaust in Ukraine and published by him memoirs Only we survived in Dittrich Verlag. He is also the initiator of documentation on anti-Semitic writings and violent crimes in Ukraine.

Since 1998 he has been director of the Institute for social workers and community workers, and since 2004 President of the Ukrainian Association of Jewish former inmates of Nazi concentration camps and ghettos. On 21 October 2009 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon as seventh Ukrainians. Borys Sabarko lives in Kiev.
