Bosom of Abraham

The colloquial phrase Abraham's bosom - as safe as in Abraham's bosom - has its origins in the biblical story of Lazarus example, which is in the bosom of Abraham to live in abject poverty in heaven (Luke 16:19-31 ), while the selfish rich ends up in hell.

Origin and Meaning

Behind it is the Jewish idea, the womb is a place of bliss ( Kingdom of God ), and the fellowship of the table with Abraham, where you get to sit in the place of honor to the right of Abraham.

Also widespread is the notion of the " bosom of Abraham " as a place of waiting, before the Messiah the dead opens the gate to heaven. However, contrary to the purgatory of this wait is peaceful.

In art, so are pictorial representations meant to remind to the root of Jesse ( Jesse tree).
