Boubín

View from the north to the summit

The Boubín ( German Kubany, older even Kubang ) is a 1362 m high mountain in the Czech Republic. It is 14 kilometers west of Prachatice in Šumava.

Location

The Boubin is the highest Sumava Summit away from the main mountain ridge. Together with the 1264 m high Bobík (carpenter), it forms a powerful, eastern Šumava foothills dominating massif. The north face drained to Volyňka and Blanice, the southern flank of the Vltava River. Are the places Kubova Huť Horni Vltavice, Buk pod Boubínem, Šumavské Hoštice ( Huschitz ) and Záblatí At the foot of Boubín.

Jungle

In Boubin massif is the reserve of the Boubínský prales ( Kubany jungle ). It extends on the southern slope in an area of 666 hectares at an altitude 940-1120 m. Already in 1858 reached the then Chief Forester Joseph John, that the so-called virgin forest was made by Prince Johann Adolf II of Schwarzenberg under protection. Thus, the Boubin primeval forest is the third oldest nature reserve in the Czech Republic. Here are the best-preserved parts of the original mountain mixed forest in the Bohemian Forest, in particular old spruce and fir stands with exceptional growth characteristics. Some trees are 300 to 400 years old. The " Spruce King " fell in 1970 at the age of 440 years in a storm; He was 57 m high and had a circumference of 5.08 m. Among the rare fungi in the Boubin primeval forest belongs to the Böhmerwaldlorchel ( Pseudorhizina Sphaerospora ), known in the Czech Republic only from three localities.

Starting from a small reservoir Boubínské jezírko ( Kubanischwelle ) leads a 3.8 km long nature trail around the fenced core area of the forest.

Observation tower

Since the spring of 2005, stands on the Boubíngipfel a lookout tower. The 21 meter high wooden tower can be climbed to 109 steps. From the platform itself provides a further view of the eastern Bohemian Forest.
