Brauroneion

The Brauroneion was the sanctuary of Artemis Brauronia on the Athenian Acropolis, which was consecrated during the reign of Pisistratus. The brauronische Artemis, patron goddess of pregnant women and women giving birth, had their main sanctuary in Brauron a demos on the east coast of Attica. The sacred precinct on the Acropolis had an irregular trapezoidal plan and had no temple. Instead served a portico, a stoa, in this function. The approximately 38 meters long and 6.80 meters deep Stoa stood on the southwest perimeter of the Acropolis and opened to the north. Two risalitartige closed side wings were of about 9.30 meters in length at their corners. The entire Western, now lost part, stood on the perimeter of the Mycenaean Acropolis. From its eastern side only traversals in the rock that served the inclusion of walls, and a few pieces of limestone have received.

In a wing of the wooden cult image of the deity was kept. Women turned for help begging to Artemis, she donated clothes that were turned over to the cult image. 346 BC, a second cult statue was erected, which was a work of Praxiteles, according to Pausanias.

The entrance to the small sacred area was located near the north -east corner, and is marked by seven rock-cut steps. Stages and northern enclosure were probably created by Mnesikles in connection with the construction of the Propylaea. The date of the complex is uncertain. In general, however, a construction period is assumed to 430 BC in connection with the construction of the Propylaea.
