Partido Trabalhista Brasileiro ( PTB) is a political party in Brazil with headquarters in Brasilia.

History

The Brazilian Workers' Party was founded on May 15, 1945 by supporters of the then Brazilian President Getúlio Vargas, after the end of his dictatorship was imminent. The party, founded primarily to stop the growth of the Communist Party and to support the 1950 re- elected as President Vargas grew rapidly. Was supported, the PTB by the unions. Between 1945 and 1962, the PTB was the third strongest force in the country, according to the social-democratic oriented PSD ( Partido Social Democrático ) and the National Democratic Union ( União Democrática Nacional - UDN). In the congressional elections in 1962 could the second strongest force UDN even surpass.

After the death of Vargas ' in 1954 João Goulart became the central figures of the party. As Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira was elected president in 1955, Goulart became vice president. This coalition was confirmed in 1960. 1961 Goulart was after the resignation of President Jânio Quadros even new president and the PTB had arrived at the height of their power. 1964 supported the military the Goulart government with a coup d'etat, the PTB and said key members of the party forbade the exercise of political mandates.

The party was founded on November 3, 1981 by Ivete Vargas, the niece of President Getúlio Vargas, again, is more liberal oriented than the previous party. Ivete Vargas was first chairman. Currently, Roberto Jefferson 's party chairman. Jefferson was found guilty in mensalão scandal for money laundering and passive bribery.
