Breadcrumb (navigation)

Breadcrumb navigation, and Ariadne path or breadcrumb (English breadcrumbs, breadcrumb navigation, breadcrumb trail ) is a design pattern for designing graphical user interfaces. Usually there is a line of text that indicates to the user, the context in which it is located within an application.

When breadcrumbs are navigation elements that show the path to the current element ( websites, category in the catalog, etc.). Brotkrumennavigationen intended to improve the orientation within deeply branched element trees (more Web sites, file system, catalogs, etc. ), by visiting links to previously, offer parent or topics related items.

The name Breadcrumb navigation was the Brothers Grimm formed based on the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel, in which the run in the forest Children (English breadcrumbs ) sprinkle breadcrumbs on the path to find the way back. The name Ariadne path is taken from the Greek mythology. Ariadne gave Theseus a ball of wool, which he unrolled upon entering the labyrinth of Daedalus. With the help of this thread Ariadne he was then back out of the labyrinth.

Navigation types

Location (City)

Path breadcrumbs show the most recently accessed elements in turn. Thus, it is apparent to a user, in what way he has come to the current element so that it can navigate backward so accordingly.

Example:

Subcategory 2.1 → Home → → Category 1 Category 3

Attributes ( property)

Attribute Breadcrumbs show on the basis of meta- information several different navigations, leading to the currently displayed each item.

Example:
