The Bregava (formerly Vidošica ) is a left tributary of the Neretva River in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina. It rises on the southern slopes of the Massif Hrgud few kilometers east of Stolac from a karst spring and flows 31 km in Klepci in the community Čapljina in the Neretva.

Catchment area

Its catchment area covers an area of ​​722.4 km ². It also includes the Dabarsko a polje, a topographically separate from Bregava Valley and on higher ground Polje with an area of 32 km ². This works as a water reservoir for the sources of Bregava at Suhavići and Bitunja. Additional water comes from the 40-km eastern Gatačko polje in Gacko.

Before the collapse of the Ponors of Biograd (municipality Nevesinje ) also flowed even the water from the Nevesinjsko polje on the Bregava in the Neretva. Today it is at the Buna - known source 20 km further north to light.

By an artificial tunnel water from the Dabarsko polje on the Fatničko polje in the basin of the dam of Bileća and thus discharged into the catchment area of ​​Trebišnjica.

Development

Downstream from Stolac loses Bregava by resulting in different places swallow holes more and more water to the south to wetland Deransko Blato, so that the flow there only periodically performs water. History

About 7 kilometers west of Stolac Stone Age rock paintings have been found in the cave of Badanj into the rock walls of the Bregava Valley.

In the Bosnian war the valley from 1993 was hard fought between Bosniaks, Croats and Serbs; almost the entire population fled, were expelled or died. Even today, many villages are almost or entirely uninhabited.

Use

The Bregava is one of the few tributaries of the Neretva, which run above ground along its entire length and thus allows the room to Stolac intensive agriculture. In the city there are several historical stone bridges over the Bregava. Downstream, it is considered periodically flowing water.

The basketball club of Stolac is called after the river KK Iskra Stolac Bregava.
