Breitling (Bay of Wismar)

The Breitling is a narrow arm of the sea between the island of Poel and the mainland in the north- east of the district North West Mecklenburg. It represents the connection of the inner Wismar Bay, beginning south of the Poeldamm, with the salt lagoon ( confluence of the streams Zaufe and Gollwitz ) dar.

The Breitling is a very flat, usually less than one meter deep waters. Large parts can fall as dry at low water, whereas it can come up to the flushing of the shallow Poeldammes at high water. In the south, the road link leads to the roadway ( Poeldamm ) via a low-lying peninsula across to Poel on the Breitling. The estuary is approximately five miles long and a maximum of one kilometer wide.

Flora and Fauna

The landscape of short high bank switch on the mainland side, on the south shores of the small islands Baumwerder and Ahrendsberg and on the coast from Poeler with very shallow flooding sections. These feature salt grassland with Schwemmlandinseln and purchased, which are interspersed by tidal creeks. The higher areas are usually very dry and barren by vegetation such as Dried skim lawn marked with briars.
