Bremen is a city in Marshall County in the U.S. state of Indiana. It is located about 130 km east of Chicago.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau United States Census Bureau Bremen had 2000 4.486 inhabitants in years. The municipal area of 5.9 km ². The population density is therefore 760 inh. / Km ².

History

The settlement beginnings were in 1836, the first place was still called Brothers Ville, but was renamed in 1846 after the German city of Bremen in New Bremen, since many of the early settlers were of German origin. The name portion of New fell off later and remained only Bremen. In March 1871, Bremen was officially declared a city.

Demographics

According to the United States Census 2000, there were 4486 people in 1689 households and 1177 families. The population density was 760 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 91.42 % White, 0.16 % African American, 0.38 % Native American, 0.31 % Asian, and 6.53 % from other ethnic groups. 1.16% were descended from two or more races. 12.02% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1689 households out of which 34.5 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.0 % were married couples living together, 9.9 % had a female householder with no husband, and 30.3% were non-families. 26.9 % of all households are made up and in 13.3 % had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.14 persons.

27.3 % of the population were under 18 years old, 9.2 % from 18 to 24, 27.4 % from 25 to 44, 20.2% between 45 and 64 and 15.9 % were 65 years or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males.

The median income for a household was $ 40,185, and the median income for a family $ 47.768. Males have a median income of $ 32,443, women $ 21,902. The per capita income was $ 17,073. 4.2% of families and 6.5 % of the population were below the poverty line.
