The Brend is a 26.18 km long, orographic right or north-western tributary of the Franconian Saale in the districts Fulda (Hessen) and Rhon - grave field ( Bavaria).

Name

The name " Brend " comes from the Indo-European bhrendh word which means to swell forth. The river gave the place its name Brendlorenzen.

The Brend rises in the Rhön from multiple sources when Bischofsheimer district Oberweißenbrunn. The main source is on Hessian ground about 600 meters northeast of the summit Sweden hill. The combined Brend source can be found from the parking lot at the pass or Oberweißenbrunn the bike path coming up when you leave there left the Sweden ski jump and the right of the two forest roads as follows kilometer to the forest. In a small sign on a tree on the right a few steps lead down. After 50 meters, the Brend springs from the rock.

Course

The Brend flows within the Bayerische Rhön nature park and the Rhön biosphere reserve by Oberweißenbrunn, Bishop Home, Unterweißenbrunn and Wegfurt to Schönau an der Brend, where it leaves the park. She continues to flow in the biosphere reserve on Brendlorenzen to Bad Neustadt and flows east of the old town in the Franconian Saale Main inflow.

Flora and vegetation

At the upper reaches of the Brend grow along the stream course Pestwurzen. The Davallseggenriede be favored by the calcareous water. The characteristic sour grass species such as Broad-leaved cotton grass, flea sedge and sedge Davalls as well as a wide variety of flowering plants there are, especially orchids such as marsh helleborine, mosquito Händelwurz and spotted orchid. Fauna

Transport links

The railway line Bad Neustadt - Bishop Home in the Valley of Brend was decommissioned in 1989. The Brendtal cycle path along the former railway embankment. Federal highway 279 runs through the valley. Just before the confluence with the Franconian Saale crosses the highway 19, the Brend.
