Brindley Benn

Brindley Horatio Benn (* 1923, † December 11, 2009 in Georgetown ) was a Guyanese politician.

Biography

Benn joined, founded by Cheddi Jagan and his wife Janet in 1950 People's Progressive Party (PPP ). He sat down next to the couple Jagan a key role in efforts to Guyana's sovereignty from the United Kingdom. In 1957 he was appointed by Prime Minister Cheddi Jagan to minister in his cabinet, and was until 1964, Minister of Education, National and Local Development, Agriculture and Natural Resources, as well as Deputy Prime Minister.

At the beginning of the 1960s he was commissioned by the British colonial power for a few months in prison. After his release, he resigned from the PPP and founded instead, the Working People's Vanguard Party ( WPVG ), before 1974, among others, Walter Rodney, the Socialist Working People's Alliance (WPA ) founded, the resistance against the increasingly dictatorial government of the People's National Congress ( PNC) was formed under Prime Minister Forbes Burnham.

In 1992, Cheddi Jagan was elected President of Guyana chosen Benn was elected on the list of PPP as a member of the National Assembly. The following year, he was named Jagan High Commissioner (High Commissioner) in Canada and held that office until 1998.

Benn, father of the incumbent Transport Minister Robeson Benn, died after a long illness.
