Janet Jagan

Janet Jagan, born Rosenberg ( born October 20, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois, † 28 March 2009 in Georgetown, Guyana ) was a Guyanese politician and writer.

Life

She married Cheddi Jagan in 1943 while studying in the United States. From 1950 to 1970, she was General Secretary of the People's Progressive Party (PPP ) and 1957 to 1964 she was Minister for Work and Health in the government of her husband. From 1976 she was a Member of Parliament.

In 1997 she was briefly Prime Minister and 19 December 1997 to August 11, 1999 President of the Republic of Guyana.

In addition, Janet Jagan was active as a writer and has published several children's books as well as a book about the history of the PPP.
