Desmond Hoyte

Hugh Desmond Hoyte ( born March 9, 1929 in Georgetown, † December 22, 2002 ibid ) was prime minister ( 1984-1985 ) and President (1985 to 1992) of Guyana.

In August 1984 he was appointed the first Vice-President and Prime Minister. President Burnham died suddenly on August 6th and had been President Hoyte to fight at a time in Guyana with persistent economic and social problems. Shortly before Burnham's death, he and other members of the PNC had talks with the opposition People's Progressive Party sought to combat the country's problems in national unity. Hoyte called for a continuation of the dialogue from but also set new elections for December 9 at. In response to criticism of previous elections he agreed to certain reforms. Nevertheless, it was the conduct of the election, which was to remain in power, the PNC with an increased majority, objected because of irregularities, which minimized Hoytes opportunities for national reconciliation.

In addition to the office of President Hoyte held from 1990 to 1992 even the Foreign Minister. The 1992 elections were won by the People's Progressive Party and appointed their leader Cheddi Jagan as president. Hoyte remained until his death chairman of the PNC. He was also the presidential candidate of the PNC in the elections of 1996 and 2001. Both times he reached the second place ( 40.6 % in 1996 and 41.7 % in 2001).
