Edward Luckhoo

Sir Edward Victor Luckhoo Kt ( born May 24, 1912 in New Amsterdam, † 3 March 1998 ) was the last Governor-General of Guyana and after conversion into a republic, the first President of Guyana.

Biography

Luckhoo graduated from Queen's College, Guyana and subsequently studied at St Catherine 's College, Oxford University. In 1931 he was admitted as an advocate and Queen's Counsel in 1965. From 1944 to 1947 he served as Justice of the Peace ( magistrates ), 1966 he was Justice of Appeal. From 1969 to 1976 he headed the Judiciary of Guyana. November 10, 1969 to be converted into a Republic in 1970, Luckhoo was the provisional governor-general and appointed acting president following. On January 1970 he was appointed a Knight Bachelor.
