New Amsterdam (Guyana)

New Amsterdam is a city in East Berbice - Corentyne in Guyana. It is located 62 miles from the capital, Georgetown, is one of the largest cities of the country. It is located four miles upriver from the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Berbice on his left side. It is also immediately south of Canje River.

New Amsterdam was originally a Dutch village at Fort Nassau. It was founded around 1730/40. The first Nieuw Amsterdam, as it was then called, was still 56 miles upstream of the Berbice on the right side. In 1790 it was the seat of the Dutch government in Guyana, in 1803 it was taken over by the British. In 1831 it lost its status as capital.
