Ceylon was a British colony on the island of Sri Lanka by 1815 until 1948.

History

The Batavian Republic, a French subsidiary Republic, and their colonies were allies of France during the First Coalition War against England. After losing the Battle of Camperdown colonies of the former United Netherlands were without protection. So also Dutch Ceylon fell into the hands of the British. William V, governor of the Netherlands, who had fled before the French troops to England, the island overrode the British king. So Ceylon was a British crown colony in 1803, and after the victory over the troops of the Kingdom of Kandy, a kingdom in the east of the island, in 1815, finally in British possession.
