BritNed

BritNed is a submarine cable that connects the UK and the Netherlands. Due to the length of 260 km, the connection will not be operated with three -phase alternating current, but it is carried out in high-voltage direct current transmission technology. The converter stations are located in the South East of England on the Isle of Grain in Kent ( Lage51.44014560.7168791 ) and in belonging to Rotterdam Maasvlakte ( Lage51.95733544.0204785 ).

Construction and commissioning

Was announced the 2007 Project, the construction work began in the fall of 2009 and were completed in late 2010. The commercial operations began in April 2011. The construction costs were approximately 600 million euros.

Technical Description

BritNed consists of two parallel -operated DC submarine cables, which together are able to transmit a power of 1 GW. The bipolar voltage is ± 450 kV. The converter stations were manufactured by Siemens, the cable coming from Asea Brown Boveri.

Operation

Is operated BritNed of the British National Grid and TenneT. Purpose of the system is to couple the British and the Dutch electricity grid and thus better connect European electricity networks with each other. This was necessary because the electricity is increasingly more volatile by the constantly increasing number of wind turbines and photovoltaic systems. The coupling of power grids enables a regional exchange of power, whereby the fluctuating wind power supply is stabilizing, and thus some can be compensated.
