Brod Fortress

The Brod Fortress (Croatian Tvrdjava Brod ) is a large imperial and royal frontier fortress from the Age of the Baroque in Croatia. It was built in 1715-1780 at the former military frontier on the Sava. It is located in the city of Slavonski Brod and is open as a place of interest for visitors.

Architecture

The Brod Fortress was designed uniformly and star-shaped. Because no stones are embedded in the environment as a building material, was built mainly of bricks. It was designed for the accommodation of 4,000 soldiers and 150 cannons and covers a total area of 141 acres of land.

The fort had three lines of defense and was surrounded by a moat.

In 1860 the fort was abandoned as a military significance. Only at the beginning of the 20th century was to be built in the surrounding area.

Between 1945 and 1991 was in the fort barracks of the Yugoslav People's Army.

The fortress today

This unique structure stands as a cultural monument protected by law and is renewed gradually. Within the fort is the gallery Ruzic.
