Brogue shoe

Brogue (from schott Gael. Brog, ir Brog "shoe" ) is the generic term for a particular group of shoe models, which are characterized by perforated ornaments of the shaft ( shaft part edges and front cap ).

Historical

Brogues go back to shepherds in Scotland and Ireland, which holes bored into their shoes in order to flush out the penetrated on marshy ground in the shoes of water can again. Variants

Today's brogues are no longer provided with through holes. Instead, the additional patch outer shaft parts with a hole decoration ( Broguing ) are provided. The group of brogues are distinguished in

  • Half- or Semibrogue
  • Fullbrogue
  • Longwing

Half- and Fullbrogues is available both with open lacing (Derby type) or closed lacing (Oxford type); the Longwing is always built with open lacing ( Blucher type).

Use

Provided with perforated ornaments ( Broguings ) shoes are mostly men's shoes. The Halfbrogue is still combined the business suit. The Fullbrogue applies, however, more than athletic shoe and is thus rather worn with sporty combinations or (especially in brown color and coarse or rough uppers ) for casual wear. The sporty appearance is particularly pronounced when Longwing, so this is not combined with business clothes, but the casual clothing is reserved.

Contrast to Budapest

In common parlance Fullbrogues are referred to in the Derby - section than Budapest sometimes. But the Brogue is slimmer and has among other optical differentiators opposite Budapest Shoe model a normal rounded, sloping toe.
