History

Broken English (1979 ) contains Marianne Faithfull's best-known pieces, their biggest single success has been their version of As Tears Go By (1964). The Ballad of Lucy Jordan

The song was originally written by Shel Silverstein for the band Dr. Hook. Dr. Hook had recorded the song in 1975 for the eponymous album. Lee Hazlewood had recorded the song in 1976 for his album 20th Century Lee. However, the most famous version is by Marianne Faithfull, who celebrated her biggest single success with this song. In Germany, the single went up to fifth place in the chart, spending eleven weeks in the Top Ten.

The song is about a 37 -year-old American housewife who is disillusioned suburban life. From the realization that their youthful dreams will never meet, she is plunged into a suicidal crisis. She had always dreamed of driving in an open sports car through Paris and to feel the warm summer wind in your hair. At the end of the song their perception of reality is already disturbed to the extent that they experienced the ambulance transport in psychiatry as a sports car ride through Paris.
